Remembering Jayne

A truly unique lady, who was so caring, generous, funny and thoughtful, with a shining personality, and who from the day she was born was known for her thick shiny hair and the fullest of lips.

Jayne was born in Nottingham and arrived in the world on the 30th of June 1973 at the City Hospital.

Jayne was the first born to Malc and Greetli. The family were living in Clifton! and soon moved on to West Bridgford and throughout her life Jayne always claimed she was from West- bridge- ford.

At the age of two, the family moved to Carlton and very soon along came Mark her brother. After five years, the family moved to the Plains estate in Arnold where all of their family life took place.

Mark reflected on his older sister in the early years growing up with those immortal words of Jaynes “He's in my bedroom again!” and he would be playing her records. We had a great Street life in those years Mark said, we used to play out all the time with the other kids on Greaves Close, they loved the snow and sledging on the green belt.

Jayne was a model child and teenager, and it was a great surprise when Jayne and Mark went to an all-night school disco and Jayne’s halo finally slipped, the first time being introduced to alcohol and getting very drunk. Mark tried his best to cover for her!.

As a family both outdoor and indoor cricket was a favourite pastime. Every Sunday they would hope and pray that it didn’t rain so they could spend the whole day at the cricket followed by the pub. Jayne was also scorer at the cricket, and many good times with the “gang” and friendships were formed for life.

Jayne’s main sporting passion was netball, becoming a bit of a “Predator!!” in that!! as we shall hear later.

Jayne educated well at the Hogarth Infants followed by the Ernehale Junior School. Jaynes senior years were taken at Arnold Hill and throughout her school years she made friends for life and many of you I know are with us today. Jayne was a popular girl and was loved by both teachers and fellow pupils.

At 16 years of age, Jayne took a role as a trainee cashier at the Midland Bank, which went on to become HSBC, where she would remain employed for a total of 18 years.

At the age of 17, Jayne met Steve, her soulmate, on New Year's Eve in 1990 at the Arrow Public house in Arnold. Steve, along with his friends and then the whole pub serenaded Jayne with “You've lost that loving feeling”.

That blew her away and that was the start of a four-year courtship. They married at St Pauls Church in Daybrook on the 16th of July 1994, what a day that was!!. The newly-weds had a wonderful honeymoon in Barbados and came home to live on Ramsey drive in Arnold.

A year later, Harry (AKA the golden child !) arrived, and three years after that George (the little bogger !) arrived. We will be hearing from Harry a little later in the service. The family then moved to Avonbridge close where they had fabulous family times with amazing holidays and building many close friendships.

It was a bit of a shock 7 years later when Jayne became pregnant and along came Lily (the princess and daughter that Jayne and Steve longed for) that made the family complete.

Jayne was also an Auntie to Josh, Charlie, Amy, Jack and Archie, and Sister-in-law to Helen and Kirsty.

On entering any room, Jayne turned heads and had the most amazing smile! that was truly magnetic. Jayne loved life and really did live her life to the full.

As a mother the children said, she was the life and soul of every gathering, party or celebration, totally and completely dedicated to us, her love was truly unconditional.

Oh my god! she spoiled us, and few could actually organise a Christmas celebration quite like mum. Jayne loved Christmas, and along with Granny and Grandad, the house would be filled to the brim with presents for everyone, food, drink and friends throughout the Christmas and New year festivities, as well as birthdays and Easter too. In fact, any public holiday was fair game for mum.

As the ultimate party animal, Mum’s many friends would be plied with as many shots as they could possibly consume. Jayne coining her nickname as the most generous of hosts “BJB” Bloody Jayne Bateman! yes, they all needed a taxi home.

There may not have been too much “Dirty Dancing” at said parties but that was Jayne’s favourite movie Steve said, we have a feeling that she probably wrote the script she knew it so well.

The love of the 80s music was ingrained into her soul, and do you know Jayne even had a personal video and message of support from her idol Robbie Williams for her 51st birthday, not many can claim that!.

Jayne was entrepreneurial in many ways through her 40’s and 50’s, with her first venture being with her mum. Jayne and Greetli started a small business and called it “Sadie’s Secrets”. They bought and sold various vintage items, and it was quite successful, but not as successful as the one Jayne set up at the age of 50, Olivia Lily Cleaning.

Needless to say, Jayne was very passionate and proud about that business, as was typical of her character putting her heart and soul into everything she did. A business that was respected by her clients and employees alike. Sadly, in early 2024 Jayne was diagnosed with secondary breast cancer but was still totally determined to carry on working and growing her new business. She carried the business on right until the very end and was totally committed that Olivia Lily would continue and be part of her legacy.

Jayne was so proud of her family, especially her three children. Harry who was the first doctor in the family on both sides, George working towards a successful career at Rolls Royce and Lily becoming the beautiful young lady starting work and becoming a mini-Jayne.

In later years Jayne went back to playing netball and was so happy when mum and daughter would play for the same team as a scoring duo, the “South Bank Predators”.

Although you could be forgiven for thinking that they were siblings with their squabbling at times. They both loved playing together and the lovely social life that went with being part of the team.

There have been so many holidays around the world over the years, and ultimately one of her favourite places was New York, to name but a few; together with the many short breaks with friends, where great times and laughs were had by all.

Jayne possessed a truly wonderful gift in being able to have multiple conversations at the same time, and she was genuinely engaged in all of them, a gift that continued to the very end of her life.

Even in the last days in Hayward House, she was still the energy in the room, always caring about everyone else, making new friends and introducing herself to the new patients who came in, because nobody should feel alone in hospital should they?. The doctors and nursing teams of course would all love her dry sense of humour.

All great and wonderful memories of a lady that was full of life until it was taken away from her in the end.

Jayne had said to the family on many occasions throughout her illness and treatment, that she had so much more to live for, which she did.

But one of her favourite sayings was ….“IT IS… WHAT IT IS”…. was her conclusion.

And with those words we will say goodbye to her shortly.

In loving tribute and memory to the truly unique lady who was a naturally beauty with a gorgeous smile, immaculate hair, and an amazing personality.

Jayne Marie Bateman, the best daughter, wife, sister, mother, aunt and friend you could wish for.

Jayne fought to the very end as she never wanted to leave anyone of us and the wonderful life she had.

Now Jayne is free from pain. May she rest in peace.

In loving memory of Jayne
